mechanical properties & heat treatment of 100Cr6 steel
| Heat temperature | Start forging temperature | Finish forging temperature | Cooling method |
| 1150 – 1200 °C | 1150 – 1200 °C | ≥ 850 °C | Pit, sand, or furnace cooling |
Annealing
- Annealing temperature: 790 – 810°C.Alternative range: 760 – 810°C
- Hold at temperature for sufficient time (typically 2–4 hours, depending on section thickness)
- Cool slowly in the furnace (controlled cooling)
- Hardness after annealing: max. 207 HBW.For cold-worked material: max. 241 HBW
- Annealing in a protective atmosphere is recommended to reduce decarburization and surface scaling
Hardening
- 100Cr6 is a through-hardening bearing steel. The final heat treatment gives possibilities for either bainitic or martensitic final structure depending on the trade-off required between toughness and hardness. Proper preheating and austenitizing are critical to achieve the desired hardness without cracking or excessive distortion
- Pre-heating (recommended): Preheat to 600 – 650°C to reduce thermal shock during austenitizing
- Austenitizing temperature: 830 – 870°C.Alternative range: 790 – 840°C.For oil quenching: 830 – 870°C.For water quenching: 830 – 870°C
- Holding time: At least 30 minutes per 25mm of section thickness (minimum 30 minutes)
- Quenching media:Oil (preferred for most sections) — provides good hardness with moderate distortionWater — for larger sections or when maximum hardness is required (increased crack risk)Martempering (hot bath) — for minimum distortion in complex shapes
- Hardness after quenching: 60 – 65 HRC.Oil quenched from 830–870°C: 62 – 64 HRC.Water quenched: 64 – 66 HRC
Stress relieving
- Perform after rough machining, heavy stock removal, or other cold working operations to reduce residual stresses
- Heat carefully to 600 – 650°C (below the tempering temperature)
- Hold at temperature for 1 hour per 25mm of section thickness (minimum 2 hours)
- Air cool after holding
- This operation reduces the risk of distortion during final heat treatment and improves dimensional stability
Tempering
- Temper immediately after the workpiece cools to hand-warm temperature (approx. 50–70°C). Delayed tempering may cause cracking
- Number of tempers: Minimum 1 time for standard applications; 2 times recommended for critical components requiring maximum toughness and property stability
- Holding time: 1 hour per 25mm of section thickness (minimum 2 hours)
- Cooling method: Air cool after each tempering cycle
- Tempering temperature range: 150 – 300°C.150 – 180°C: For maximum hardness (60–65 HRC) with good wear resistance180 – 250°C: For balanced hardness and toughness (hardness decreases from ~808 HV to ~665 HV)250 – 300°C: For improved toughness with slightly reduced hardness
