What is plastic mold steel

Plastic mold steels are typically used to produce molds for injection molding, blow molding, compression molding, and extrusion. These steels are designed to withstand repeated thermal and mechanical stress during molding processes while maintaining dimensional stability and surface integrity. Unlike general tool steels, they are optimized for properties such as polishability, corrosion resistance, and machinability.

Typical plastic mould steel grades

NSPM offers a wide selection of commonly used plastic mold steel grades to meet different functional requirements and application scenarios.
These include pre-hardened steels, alloy steels, and corrosion-resistant stainless mold steels.
We not only supply these grades but also help customers choose the most suitable material based on mold type, production volume, and required surface finish.

Flat bars and plates are available in thicknesses from 10 mm to 350 mm and widths up to 2300 mm. These are commonly used for mold bases, cavity plates, and inserts.

For large molds and heavy-duty applications, we offer forged blocks with thicknesses from 100 mm to 1200 mm. These forged blocks have excellent internal quality and strength.

NSPM also provides customized solutions based on customer drawings. We can supply pre-machined components, special dimensions, and tailored heat treatment conditions.

mechanical properties & heat treatment for plastic mold steel

Our materials are mainly supplied in a pre-hardened condition, typically 28–42 HRC, allowing direct machining without additional quenching and tempering, reducing time, cost, and distortion risk.

We also offer flexible supply options. Annealed material (180–220 HB) is available for rough machining with better machinability. For higher surface hardness and wear resistance, surface hardening can reach up to 50–55 HRC, depending on grade and process.

For quenching and tempering, cooling methods can be selected based on steel grade and section size, including the use of a cooling tank. Proper process control ensures required hardness, toughness, and stability.

properties of our plastic mould steel

NSPM plastic mold steels are engineered to deliver superior performance across multiple dimensions. These key properties ensure reliability and efficiency in mold manufacturing and operation.

NSPM plastic mold steels offer excellent machinability, allowing fast and precise processing of complex cavities. This helps reduce machining time, lower tooling costs, and improve overall production efficiency.

Our steels provide high polishability, enabling mirror finishes up to Ra ≤ 0.05 μm. This ensures outstanding surface quality for molds used in high-gloss and appearance-critical plastic products.

NSPM materials maintain good dimensional stability during long-term use. This minimizes deformation, ensures consistent mold accuracy, and reduces the need for frequent adjustments during production cycles.

Our plastic mold steels resist corrosion caused by moisture and plastic additives. This extends mold life and ensures reliable performance, especially in humid environments or corrosive processing conditions.

NSPM steels deliver excellent wear resistance, making them suitable for high-cycle production. They maintain shape and surface quality over time, ensuring consistent output and reduced maintenance requirements.

With good weldability, our steels allow easy repair and modification. This helps extend mold service life, reduce downtime, and provide flexibility for design changes or maintenance needs.

Various types of steels for different mold making

Different molding processes require different material properties.
NSPM offers a complete range of plastic mold steels designed for various mold types and processing methods.

Injection Molding

Injection molding is one of the most widely used processes in the plastic industry. It requires steels with excellent machinability and polishability to create complex cavities and cores for thermoplastics. NSPM supplies grades such as P20 and NAK80 for injection molds. These materials ensure smooth surfaces, precise dimensions, and long service life, making them ideal for high-volume production.

Compression Molding

Compression molding is typically used for thermosetting plastics and rubber. It involves high pressure and requires steels with good strength and thermal stability. Our alloy steels for compression molds offer excellent resistance to deformation and wear. This ensures consistent mold performance even under demanding conditions.

Blow Molding

Blow molding is commonly used for producing bottles and hollow products. It requires steels with good corrosion resistance and thermal performance. These properties help maintain uniform cooling and prevent material degradation. NSPM provides corrosion-resistant grades such as S136, that ensure uniform cooling and long mold life in bottle molds and hollow product molds.

Plastic Extrusion

Extrusion molds operate continuously and are exposed to high temperatures and friction. Extrusion and other processes, including multi-cavity molds, require steels with high wear resistance and durability. Our plastic mold steel solutions are suitable for extrusion molds and other specialized applications, ensuring reliable performance in continuous production environments.
