mechanical properties & heat treatment of 1.2362 steel
| Heat temperature | Start forging temperature | Finish forging temperature | Cooling method |
| 1100 – 1150 °C | 1050 – 1100 °C | ≥ 850 °C | Pit, sand, or furnace cooling |
Annealing
- Heat slowly and uniformly to 800 – 850°C (1472 – 1562°F).Alternative range per SIJ: 800 – 840°C
- Hold at temperature for sufficient time (typically 2 – 5 hours, depending on section thickness)
- Cool slowly in the furnace at a controlled rate of 10 – 20°C/h (50 – 68°F/h) down to approximately 600°C
- Then air cool to room temperature
- Hardness after annealing: max. 225 – 250 HB (approx. 22–23 HRC)
- Annealing in a protective atmosphere is recommended to reduce decarburization and surface scaling
Hardening
- 1.2362 (X63CrMoV5-1) is a Cr-Mo-V alloyed cold working tool steel that is both oilhardening and airhardening. It features high wear resistance, high compressive strength, good toughness, and excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment. The steel can be hardened by oil quenching, warm bath quenching, or air quenching, offering flexibility for different tool geometries and size requirements. Temper immediately after quenching
- Pre-heating (recommended for vacuum/air quenching): Pre-heat slowly to 600 – 750°C to avoid thermal shock before austenitizing
- Austenitizing temperature: 980 – 1020°C (1796 – 1868°F).Alternative lower range: 930 – 970°C for specific applications where lower distortion is required.Smaller sections may be hardened from the higher end of the range
- Holding time: After temperature equalization, hold for 15 – 30 minutes
- Quenching media:Oil (preferred for most sections) — quench immediately after holdingAir (only for small dimensions, ≤ small cross-sections)Warm bath (450 – 500°C / 842 – 932°F) — for martempering complex shapes to minimize distortionVacuum / high-speed gas quenching is also suitable for distortioncritical applications
- Hardness after quenching: 61 – 63 HRC (approx. 62 HRC typical). For the 930–970°C lower austenitizing range, quenched hardness is approx. 60 – 63 HRC
Stress relieving
- Perform after rough machining or heavy stock removal, especially for tools with complex shapes or unbalanced cross-sections, to reduce the risk of distortion during final heat treatment
- Heat carefully to approx. 650°C (1202°F)
- Hold at temperature for 1 – 2 hours (after thorough heating in neutral atmosphere)
- Cool slowly in the furnace, or after holding, air cool
- This operation is performed to reduce distortion during final hardening
Tempering
- Temper immediately after the workpiece cools to handwarm temperature (approx. 50–70°C). Delayed tempering may cause cracking
- Number of tempers: Minimum 2 times. Double tempering is mandatory for this grade to ensure complete transformation of retained austenite and property stability. After each tempering cycle, cool to room temperature before the next tempering
- Holding time: Soak for at least 1 hour per 20mm of section thickness (minimum 2 hours per cycle) and air cool after each cycle
- Tempering temperature selection based on required properties:Low-temperature tempering (180 – 250°C): For maximum hardness (58 – 62 HRC) with excellent wear resistance.High-temperature tempering (500 – 550°C): For enhanced toughness and thermal stability (approx. 55 – 61 HRC). Especially suitable when the steel serves as a substrate for PVD coatings or nitriding.Avoid tempering in the 300 – 450°C range (except for specialized applications), where toughness may be reduced
