mechanical properties & heat treatment of 10222 steel
| Heat temperature | Start forging temperature | Finish forging temperature | Cooling method |
| 1180°C – 1220°C | 1100°C – 1150°C | ≥ 800°C | Slow cooling (Furnace cooling / Pit cooling) |
Annealing
- Heating: Heat slowly and uniformly to 830°C - 870°C (depending on the steel grade, e.g., C45 or 42CrMo).
- Soaking: Hold for 1 to 2 hours after the furnace load reaches temperature to ensure complete phase transformation.
- Cooling: Furnace cool to 500°C at a rate of ≤30°C/hour, then air cool to achieve a soft, machinable structure.
Hardening
- Heating: Heat the ring to 840°C - 880°C (for alloy steel like 42CrMo) or 820°C - 850°C (for carbon steel like A105/C45).
- Soaking: Hold at temperature for 1 to 1.5 hours to ensure uniform austenitization.
- Quenching: Quench in polymer medium or oil with proper agitation to obtain a uniform martensitic structure and minimize distortion.
Stress relieving
- Heating: Heat to 550°C - 620°C (well below the transformation temperature).
- Holding: Hold for 2 to 3 hours to ensure uniform temperature throughout the ring cross-section.
- Cooling: Slow furnace cooling to 350°C, then air cool in still air.
Tempering
- Reheating: Reheat to 550°C - 650°C immediately after quenching to achieve a tempered sorbite structure.
- Soaking: Hold for 2 to 4 hours to stabilize the microstructure and achieve target hardness (e.g., HB 220 - 260).
- Cooling: Air cool to room temperature.
