Annealing
- Heating & Soaking: Heat slowly to 840°C - 880°C and hold for 1 hour per 25mm of maximum section thickness to ensure complete austenitization.
- Grain Refinement: Soaking at temperature to refine the coarse as-forged grain structure and homogenize the microstructure.
- Cooling: Furnace cool (slow cooling) at a rate of ≤20°C/hour down to 300°C before air cooling, allowing hydrogen to diffuse out to prevent white spots/cracks.
Hardening
- Heating: Heat slowly to 840°C - 880°C (for alloy steel) or 820°C - 850°C (for carbon steel) and soak thoroughly.
- Soaking: Maintain at the hardening temperature for 1.5 to 3 hours to ensure uniform temperature from surface to core.
- Quenching: Quench in agitated oil or polymer medium (water is not recommended for large alloy shafts due to cracking risk) to achieve a martensitic structure.
Stress relieving
- Heating: Heat uniformly to 550°C - 650°C (below the Ac1 transformation temperature).
- Holding: Hold for 2 to 4 hours depending on the cross-section to ensure the core reaches the temperature.
- Cooling: Slow furnace cooling to 350°C, followed by still air cooling to minimize dimensional distortion.
Tempering
- Reheating: Reheat immediately after quenching to 550°C - 650°C to obtain a tempered sorbite structure.
- Soaking: Hold for 3 to 6 hours to ensure uniform hardness and relieve quenching stresses throughout the heavy section.
- Cooling: Air cooling (or rapid cooling in oil/water if the material is susceptible to temper brittleness) to ambient temperature.
