DIN 1.2358 Cold Work Tool Steel offers excellent wear resistance, toughness, and compressive strength. With good hardenability and dimensional stability, it is ideal for cold-work dies, punches, shearing, and forming tools.

Annealing
- Heat slowly and uniformly to 820 – 860°C (1508 – 1580°F)
- Hold at temperature for 2 – 5 hours, depending on section thickness and workpiece size
- Cool slowly in the furnace to room temperature, or cool at a controlled rate down to approximately 600°C and then air cool
- Hardness after annealing: max. 240 HB (approx. 22–23 HRC)
- Annealing in a protective atmosphere is recommended to reduce decarburization
Hardening
- 1.2358 is a chromiummolybdenumvanadium alloyed cold work tool steel. It offers a good combination of high toughness, high wear resistance, good hardenability, and excellent dimensional stability after heat treatment. The steel has good throughhardenability and very good surface hardening properties. Temper immediately after quenching.
- Pre-heating (recommended): Pre-heat slowly to 600 – 750°C to avoid thermal shock during austenitizing
- Austenitizing temperature: 950 – 980°C (1742 – 1796°F).Preferred range: 950–970°C for oil or salt bath quenching.Alternative: 980–1010°C (air or oil quenching) per SIJ data
- Holding time: After temperature equalization, hold for 15 – 30 minutes (or 30 minutes per 25mm of section thickness)
- Quenching media:Oil (preferred for most sections)Pressure gas (N₂)Air (for small sections)Hot bath at 500–550°C (martempering for complex shapes)
- Hardness after quenching: Approx. 60–65 HRC (typically 60–64 HRC)
Stress relieving
- Perform after rough machining or heavy stock removal, especially for tools with complex shapes or unbalanced cross-sections, to reduce the risk of distortion during final heat treatment
- Heat carefully to 600 – 650°C (1112 – 1202°F)
- Hold at temperature for 1 – 2 hours (or 2 hours per 25mm of section thickness)
- Cool slowly in the furnace, or after holding, air cool
- For prehardened material, stress relieving at 500 – 550°C is possible
- This operation is performed to relieve stresses set up by extensive machining or complex shapes
Tempering
- Temper immediately after the workpiece cools to handwarm temperature (approx. 50–70°C). Delayed tempering may cause cracking
- Number of tempers: Minimum 2 times. Double tempering is recommended to improve toughness and ensure complete transformation, with intercooling to room temperature between cycles
- Holding time: Soak for at least 1 hour per 20mm of section thickness (minimum 2 hours per cycle)
- Cooling method: Air cool after each tempering cycle (must cool to room temperature before the next tempering)
