1.2361 Cold Work Tool Steel offers excellent wear resistance, toughness, and compressive strength. With good hardenability and dimensional stability, it is ideal for cold-work dies, punches, and forming tools.

Annealing
- Heat slowly and uniformly to 810 – 860°C (780–840°C per some sources) and soak thoroughly
- Hold at temperature for 2 – 5 hours, depending on section thickness
- Cool slowly in the furnace at a controlled rate down to approximately 600°C
- Then air cool to room temperature
- Hardness after annealing: max. 265 HB (approx. 25–27 HRC)
- Annealing in a protective atmosphere is recommended to reduce decarburization and surface scaling
Hardening
- 1.2361 (X91CrMoV18) is a martensitic stainless cold work tool steel with high carbon (approx. 0.90%) and high chromium (approx. 18.0%) content. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, high hardness (up to 56–58 HRC), and good wear resistance after heat treatment. Due to its high carbon content, machining characteristics are similar to high-speed steel (HSS). Temper immediately after quenching
- Pre-heating (recommended): Pre-heat slowly to 600 – 750°C to avoid thermal shock before austenitizing
- Austenitizing temperature: 1000 – 1050°C (1,000 up to 1,050°C).Preferred hardening temperature: 1000–1050°C.Hold at the specified temperature for 15–30 minutes after complete heating
- Holding time: After temperature equalization, hold for 30 minutes per 25mm of section thickness. Maximum holding time at temperature is 30 minutes / 25mm cross-section
- Quenching media: Oil (preferred) – quench immediately after holding.Alternative: compressed air (not recommended for larger sections).Do not use water quenching due to high cracking risk
- Hardness after quenching: approx. 56 – 58 HRC.SIJ data: hardness after quenching is 56 HRC.MOYAN data: hardness after hardening is 58–60 HRC
Stress relieving
- Perform after rough machining or heavy stock removal to reduce the risk of distortion during final heat treatment
- Heat carefully to approx. 650°C and hold for 1 hour at temperature
- After holding, air cool to room temperature
- This operation is performed to reduce distortion during hardening
Tempering
- Temper immediately after the workpiece cools to handwarm temperature (approx. 50–70°C). Delayed tempering may cause cracking
- Number of tempers: Minimum 2 times. Double tempering is mandatory for this grade to ensure complete transformation of retained austenite and property stability. After each tempering cycle, cool to room temperature before the next tempering
- Holding time: Soak for at least 2 hours after complete heating (minimum 2 hours per cycle)
- Cooling method: Air cool after each tempering cycle
