Annealing
- Heat to 860–890°C and hold for 3 hours.
- Furnace cool to 730–750°C, hold isothermally for 4 hours.
- Furnace cool to below 550°C, then air cool. Annealed hardness ≤ 229 HB.
Hardening
- Two-stage preheating: First heat to 600–650°C, then to 830–850°C.
- Austenitizing temperature: 1000–1030°C – hold for 15–30 minutes.
-
Quenching media: Oil, air, or vacuum.
Oil quenching: 52–56 HRC; Air cooling: 50–54 HRC.
Stress relieving
- Heat to 600–650°C.
- Hold for 1–2 hours after reaching temperature.
- Furnace cool to approx. 500°C, then air cool.
Tempering
- Number of tempers: Minimum 2 times, 3 times recommended.
- 1st temper: 530–560°C – hold, then air cool.
- 2nd temper: Adjust within 530–650°C to achieve desired working hardness.
-
3rd temper (optional): For stress relief – use a temperature 30–50°C lower than the highest tempering temperature.
Avoid tempering near 500°C (lowest toughness zone).
