L6 1.2714 SKT4 hot work tool steel
1.2714 tool steel offers excellent impact toughness, wear resistance, and high-temperature strength. With good hardenability and dimensional stability, ideal for hot forging, die casting, and extrusion tooling.
- Standard: AISI L6, DIN 1.2714, JIS SKT4, GB 5CrNiMoV
- Technique: EAF + LF + VD or ESR, forged, multi-directional forging ratio ≥4, stress-relief annealed
- Shape: Flat, Round, Blocks
- Heat treatment:: Supplied in annealed condition, hardness ≤248 HBW; pre-hardened to 38–44 HRC (quenched and tempered) available on request
- Surface Treatment: Black, turned, milled / ground, sawn ends
- Tolerance: flat bar thickness: +0.5/-0.0 mm (turned), width as agreed; forged blocks: ±0.2 mm

- Grain size and mechanical properties shall meet the standards specified in GB/T 1299-2025 for Tool and Die Steels (or similar)

Annealing
- Heat to 740 - 760°C (1364 - 1400°F) and soak thoroughly
- Slow cooling in furnace at max 10 - 20°C/h (50 - 68°F/h) to approx. 600°C (1112°F)
- Then air cool. Hardness after annealing: max. 248 - 255 HB
Hardening
- Preheating (Two-Stage): First stage at 600 - 650°C (1112 - 1202°F), second stage at 830 - 850°C (1526 - 1562°F)
- Austenitizing: 830 - 880°C (1526 - 1616°F)
- Quenching Media: Oil (achieving ~58 HRC) or Air (achieving ~56 HRC)
- Post-Quenching: Temper as soon as the tool reaches hand-warm temperature
Stress relieving
- Perform after rough machining
- Heat carefully to 600 - 650°C (1112 - 1202°F)
- Hold for 2 hours per 25mm of section thickness
- Furnace cool to 500°C (932°F), then air cool
Tempering
- Number of Tempers: Minimum 2 times (highly recommended), 3 times for complex dies
- Method: Heat uniformly to required temperature; soak for 2 hours per 25mm of section thickness; then air cool
